Avalon Blend Black Tea benefits the Avalon Recovery Society in Vancouver - buy tea online at The Secret Garden Tea CompanyWe have over 50 teas on our menu, but one of our personal favourites is the Avalon Blend Black Tea, a loving blend of vanilla, Earl Grey, and rose petals.

We created this blend to honour of the Avalon Recovery Society, a local charity dedicated to helping women overcome addictions. A portion of sales from our Avalon Blend goes toward this worthy organization!

The Avalon Recovery Society is all privately funded. As we head into the holiday season, celebrating the blessings and community in our lives, consider sharing the love by donating to the Avalon Recovery Society. Every little bit makes a difference!

Secret Garden featured in Traditions magazine

Secret Garden was featured in the June 2014 edition of Traditions Magazine by Darpan, as the perfect place for a bachelorette party:

“The Secret Garden Tea Company is a local favourite, located in Vancouver’s Kerrisdale neighbourhood. The warm, cozy atmosphere, delicious tea and delicate tea cups provide a beautiful setting for the ultimate girlfriend bonding experience. One of the owners, Kathy Wyder, says many bridal showers are conducted on site. You can bring your own décor and request your favourite tea blends to make your shower perfect. But if having a shower on site is not your “cup of tea,” The Secret Garden offers a “High Tea to Go” package with tea and a set menu of sweet and savory treats, so you can surprise the bride with a lovely tea party picnic, including the aunties and grandmothers, before the real bachelorette partying begins!”

“I have been going to the Secret Garden since I was three years old for high-tea with my Mum. My mum created the tradition for me and it is our own very special mother and daughter activity every year on my birthday.

“I love going to the Secret Garden because its nice and quiet and because everything is so fresh and very high quality. My favourite tea is Blue Angel. I normally have it a few times a week. Me and mum are so happy that we have an amazing place for high tea.”

The History of Afternoon Tea and High Tea

Posted on

The history of afternoon tea and high teaSecret Garden’s tea service brings a little bit of tea tradition to the heart of Vancouver.

Legend has it that the afternoon tea tradition began in England in the late 1800s. At that time dinner was eaten late in the evening around 9pm, often leaving people hungry in the afternoon.

The Duchess of Bedford complained of a “sinking feeling” in her stomach during the day, and began taking tea and light snacks in the afternoon. She invited her friends to join her tea breaks, and the idea spread like wildfire through their social circles. Afternoon tea was the perfect way to enjoy a meal and socialize with friends.

While afternoon tea was characterized by lighter fare, high tea was traditionally a heavier meal served at the end of a work day on a high table (hence the name).

Secret Garden’s High Tea could be considered an afternoon tea, though we serve it from noon until early evening. We chose to call our premier service “high tea” simply because our customers in Canada are more familiar with this term! But regardless of the name, our tea service continues a longstanding tradition: taking time to relax over delicious food and tea, and enjoying the company of good friends.
