Sue is a customer who works at Hager Books around the corner from our store. Recently her nephew was diagnosed with a chronic liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). Before his illness he was an avid athlete, in his second year of college on a baseball scholarship.
Sue and her family discovered that very little is known about how to treat PSC, so they undertook the huge task of raising enough money to fund medical research. They recently held a fundraiser, to which Secret Garden donated. So far Sue and her family have raised $33,000 of their $50,000 goal!
To donate to their goal, please visit the Canadian Liver foundation at liver.ca/psc. Sue also emphasized the importance of becoming an organ donor. She said, “It is the greatest gift you can give and can save many lives!”

We have a new treat to share with you!
Our pastry chef took our fresh, housemade shortbread and infused it with rosemary, olive oil, and a hint of sea salt. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and savoury. Buttery, flaky, and delicious with a cup of tea!

As a female-owned company, we’re happy to see groups like the TELUS Women’s Network, which supports the professional development of women at the global telecommunications company TELUS.
Recently the Vancouver chapter of the TELUS Women’s Network held a fundraiser for Soroptimist International of Vancouver, part of a global charity dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls locally and internationally.
The Secret Garden donated a gift basket for their fundraiser, which in total raised $800 for Soroptimist International! Below is a photo of the event planning committee enjoying High Tea at The Secret Garden:
It doesn’t take much to convince us to have tea, but when we see people on TV or in a movie enjoying tea, we can’t help but wish we were sipping our own cup of Creamy Earl Grey!
Do you have a favourite TV show or movie in which the characters enjoy tea? If so, tell us on Facebook by 3/15 for a chance to win a free pot of tea and a scone!
You’ll get an extra entry into the drawing if you describe the scene. We look forward to hearing your recommendations–mostly so we can find some new favourite movies and shows to enjoy!
Did you know we have a full breakfast menu?
Breakfast at the Garden is the best way to start your day. We’ll brew you pot of strong tea like Buckingham Palace, and even serve coffee for those who need a stronger caffeine-kick in the morning!
And along with tea, why not try a freshly-baked cheese scone filled with crisp bacon and scrambled eggs, or Gammy’s apple pancakes, or a French toast croissant?
Now through the end of February, we’re bringing back our popular special: get a free mini scone with jam with any breakfast order of $7 or more! Just mention the Winter Breakfast Special.
Breakfast hours are:
- Monday-Friday: 8am-11am
- Saturday: 8am-11pm
- Sunday: 9am-11pm
We hope to see you soon!
Secret Garden is known for our delicious mini masterpieces, from dainty lemon tarts to mouth-watering sandwiches. Now we’d like to introduce you to the woman behind them all: Lysanne our head pastry chef!
Lysanne has been has been crafting pastries for 23 years, and has been at Secret Garden for 10. She learned her art in Montreal and began her career at the Patisserie de Gascogne. She then moved to Victoria, where she served as a pastry chef at the Oak Bay Marina, before moving to Vancouver and serving at the Four Seasons Hotel.
Eventually she found her way to Secret Garden, where she now heads up a kitchen team of 12 and provide the inspiration all of our treats!
In addition to managing details for our rotating treats and permanent menu, she also updates our High Tea Menu every two months with brand new sandwiches and sweets. For each High Tea Menu we produce, Lysanne spends hours of testing and research. She is constantly innovating new flavour combinations, using seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Lysanne enjoys the entire process: from imagining to tasting the final creation. “I love taking things so uninteresting to start with (flour, sugar etc.), and then this magic happens!” The ultimate reward though, is seeing guests enjoy themselves. “It’s fun to see everyone who comes here having a good time with friends and family. That’s what makes it special.”
This week’s tea story comes from Calley R., who celebrates Mother’s Day at The Secret Garden every year:
“Our tradition is to have a 4 generations Mother’s Day tea since my daughter was born. She is five now. It is her, me, my mother and my grandmother. Such an amazing tradition we look forward to every year!
“Thank you [Secret Garden] for being there for all our family’s special moments. Birthday parties, baby showers, Mother’s Day, retirement parties. We love Secret Garden!”
